“陌生的熟悉人”——英語熟詞僻義（一）

詞匯是英語教與學(xué)的基礎(chǔ)，考試中沒有給出明確的考查詞匯表，這就給命題人提供了廣闊的活動空間，給他們減少了很多限制，但給考生增加了一定難度。英語中國的一詞多意和熟詞僻義現(xiàn)象是普遍存在的。今天，筆者跟大家分享一些考試中?？嫉氖煸~僻義，并給出典型例句幫您更好地理解和掌握。

A

1. address

熟義：地址，寫地址

Please tell me your address. 請告訴我你的地址。

僻義：(1) vt. 稱呼

The president should be addressed as “Mr. President”. 總統(tǒng)應(yīng)稱呼為“總統(tǒng)先生”。

(2) vt. 向…發(fā)表演說

It is said that our headmaster will address the meeting. 據(jù)說我們的校長將在會議上發(fā)表演說。

2. admit

熟義：vt. 承認

I admitted that I was afraid of the monster.我承認我害怕那個怪獸。

僻義：(1) vt. 容納

The theatre only admits 1,000 persons.這個電影院能容納1000人。

(2) vt. 允許進入

The servant opened the door and admitted me(into the house).服務(wù)員打開門讓我進屋。

3. against

熟義：prep. 反對，違背

Somebody argue against the idea. 一些人反對這個觀點。

僻義：prep.襯著，迎著，靠著

The picture looks good against the white wall.襯著白墻這張照片看起來很不錯。

4. air

熟義：n.空氣

Everyone need breathe fresh air. 每個人都需要呼吸新鮮的空氣。

僻義：(1) v. 抒發(fā);傾訴;傳播

Don’t air your troubles too often. 不要經(jīng)常發(fā)牢騷。

(2) n. 樣子，神態(tài)，氣氛

There was a comfortable air about her room.她房間的氣氛很舒服。

5. amount

熟義：n. 量

Any amount, great or small, will be appreciated.

數(shù)量不論多少都將受到歡迎。

僻義：(1) vi. 達到，共計

The cost amounted to $ 2000. 成本是2000美元。

(2) vi. 相當于

What you have said amounts to a refusal.你所說的相當于是拒絕。

6. announce

熟義：vt. 宣布

They are hoping that she will announce for governor. 他們希望她將宣布參加競選州長。

僻義：vt. 顯示，預(yù)告

Warm sunshine announces the coming of spring.溫暖的陽光預(yù)告著春天的到來。
